Product Description
D17 - Powerspark Bosch 034 SVDA Distributor
Powerspark Ignition offer two different types of distributor developed for the air cooled Volkswagen and Porsche; the Bosch 009 and the Bosch 034 SVDA. You can read more about these distributors below.
Both are available with as traditional points (to keep it stock), electronic ignition (for better performance and reliability), or High Energy (for serious tuning and racing).
This product, 034 SVDA Electronic or SKU D17 is one of our best selling distributors of all time. It is very popular with the air cooled Volkswagen fraternity.
We recommend the 034 SVDA distributor for the Type 1 Volkswagen Beetle, Type 2 Split Screen Bus/Camper, Type 2 Bay Window Bus/Camper, Type 3 Notchback/Fastback/Squareback.
Which one is best for you depends on the vehicle and its intended use.
From the factory, most air cooled Volkswagens were fitted with an all vacuum advance distributor. There were many variations of these made over the years, each intended to work with the various standard carburettors Volkswagen fitted, and to meet ever changing emissions regulations in different territories. Matching the right distributor to the right carburettor on the right engine all these years later can be difficult, which explains why so many of these cars have been fitted with the all centrifugal advance 009 distributor. It’ll work with most VWs, regardless of the carburettor setup, but without the vacuum advance it isn't the ideal distributor for road use.
We always recommend the Bosch 034 for classic Volkswagens unless your car is an early car with Solex PICT30 carbs OR is regarded as a full race application.

About the Bosch 009 distributor (centrifugal advance only):
The 009 distributor can be considered a one size fits all. Originally intended for use on industrial engines, it's an all-centrifugal distributor, with the advance increasing as the engine revs increase, giving full advance at around 3000rpm.
This distributor solves the problems encountered when fitting after-market carburettors, which often lack the correct vacuum signal for a standard VW all-vacuum distributor. As such it's proved its worth again and again on the race track. The 009 is ideal if you've been having trouble getting the correct timing with your original VW distributor and don't have a suitable vacuum port on the carburettor(s).
Although the 009 can work with most air cooled VWs, it can lead to the infamous '009 flat spot' around 2000-2500 rpm. This can sometimes be reduced by adjusting the carburettor, but that usually results in increased fuel consumption.
About the Bosch 034 SVDA distributor (centrifugal and vacuum advance):
The 034 SVDA (Single Vacuum Dual Advance) is similar to the 009 but in addition to the centrifugal advance, also features a vacuum advance facility giving an extra 10-12 degrees of advance. This allows it to 'sense' the engine load, adding some advance when necessary. This eliminates the 009 flat spot and the extra advance when cruising on a light throttle saves fuel and leads to cooler running temperatures.
This is our recommended distributor for all air cooled VWs where a suitable vacuum port is present on the carburettor.
We've sold thousands of these to happy Volkswagen owners over the last 10 years.
Our SVDA works great with most stock carbs*, Weber 34ICT, single or dual Weber IDF and dual Dellorto DRLAs**.
* Note that early cars with Solex 28 PICT or 30 PICT-1 do not work well with an SVDA
** With Dual twin choke carbs, the SVDA works even better if an anti pulse valve is fitted between the carb and the distributor.
About Points, Electronic and High Energy Distributors from Powerspark Ignition:

The traditional ignition system used in most cars up until the 1980s.
- To be used with a Standard or Sports ignition coil, resistance reading above 1.4 ohms. OK to use copper HT Leads.
Sports Electronic Ignition Distributors:
Looks like an original points distributor but contains an electronic ignition module that uses a magnetic pickup instead of contact breaker points.
- To be used with a Standard or Sports ignition coil, resistance reading above 1.4 ohms. Not suitable for use with copper HT Leads
High Energy Electronic Ignition Distributors:
Looks like an original points distributor but contains an electronic ignition module capable of 3x the spark of sports electronic ignition.
- To be used with a High Energy ignition coil, resistance reading below 1.4 ohms. Not suitable for use with copper HT Leads
